Clan An Drumma
"Keep it tribal" is their motto and that they do. Clan an Drumma (Children of the Drum) were founded by Joe Kilna MacKenzie. They are worth a listen and if you can see them in person I think you'd likely enjoy that as well.
Bagpipes
I love to listen to the pipes. I think it must be nearly universal although I did have one woman literally run screaming from the shop one day. She was yelling at her husband, "I can't stand that screeching" as she barreled out through the door. Fife and drums hadn't bothered her but the pipes did. Perhaps we should have pipers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq...
Karan Casey
I first heard Karan Casey when she was with Solas and the group was performing at Lime Kiln (a local theatre location). I was more than taken. I thought that her voice was the best I'd ever heard. It has a quality that takes me to some genetically remembered place (and time). Of course, her music is mostly "Celtic" and she was groomed as a keeper of traditional Irish music. I've bought several of her albums. I hope that you enjoy this.
Loreena McKennittI am a fan of this angelic voice. Miss McKennitt's instrument calms me and makes sometimes difficult moments bearable. She is, if you haven't already figured it out, one of my favorite singers.
From her company site:
Born in the province of Manitoba, Canada, Loreena moved to Stratford, Ontario, Canada in 1981, where she still resides. She has acted and sung in, and composed music for, Stratford Festival of Canada productions ranging from The Tempest (1982) to The Merchant Of Venice (2001).
Her recording career began in 1985 with the album Elemental. In the fledgling years of her label Quinlan Road, Loreena ran its operations from her kitchen table, selling recordings by mail order and producing her own concert tours across the country. Quinlan Road's catalogue is currently distributed around the world by The Verve Music Group (US), Universal Music (Canada and other territories including Italy and Spain) and a number of independents including Keltia Music (France) and SPV (Germany).
Loreena continues to manage her career from her Stratford base. An active member of her community, she has founded and oversees important charitable undertakings in the fields of water safety and family/childhood support services.
Favorite Artist - Enya
Sister to Maire Brennan, these two chanteuses have performed and recorded some wonderful music. However, Enya early on saw a solo career as her thing and moved on from Clannad.
Electronic Bagpipes
I love bagpipes, the war pipes, although that loophole version from Ireland sounds good, too. They stir my blood. I don't doubt that my Irish, Scots, Welsh and Cornish ancestry has something to do with that. I think the pipes make a statement as much now as when the English banned them from Scotland. If I were POTUS, I would be piped into and out of every public event. My piper would be escorted by an armed Marine and US Army Airborne Ranger and the group would be in the charge of a Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer armed with a sharpened cutlass or an Old Guard officer with spontoon. The pipes kick ass and I'd want everyone to know that is exactly what I'd do to our enemies. But enough of the Walter Mittyisms, from Lawdog comes this bit about a Spanish musician who invented electronic pipes. Jose Angel Hevia Velasco -- who performs under the name Hevia -- is a Spanish bagpiper who hauled off and invented a MIDI bagpipe which he plays live during concerts. He's actually pretty good.
The following video is probably his most famous piece:
KT Tunstall
Saw her the other night on some show and thought I'd look up some performances on YouTube. Here they are. I think the girl has some talent. Oh, and she says she's not gay...
For us, the American ideal is personified in the concept of self-reliance, work ethic, honesty/forthrightness, decency, personal property rights, family, religion, an ability to defend oneself from criminals and crooked politicians, and personal responsibility.
