Alzheimer's Disease
My immediate concern is my mother, aged 73. Although she still lives "on her own" she gets quite a bit of attention I never needed to give her and I pay her bills, ensure the taxes and licenses are up-to-date, etc. I do all the mowing and any heavy chores (but probably would anyway) and it is up to me to remember the names of her seven cats. Right now, Mom is on
Aricept. I can tell if she somehow fails to take the medicine on time. However, again, we're blessed that even though she is a breast cancer survivor she has no other health issues now. She is also blessed with a network of friends and professional service providers who are concerned and look out for her best interests. It seems that we have the best possible situation and still...
My wife's sister-in-law's father has the
Alzheimer's disease, as do some other acquaintances. My dental hygenist says that her father and both inlaws had the disease. Everybody I talk to who has run through the whole course of the disease says, "it is hell." Everybody. So far, for me with my mom it is just discouraging and sad. I am very happy that I'm retired and able to devote as much time to her care as I can. Timing is everything!
I can only say this one thing more now. If you suspect that your parent is in anyway exhibiting the symptoms of Alzheimer's, get them to the doctor now. There are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease and the sooner they are administered, the better.
