Arlen Specter changes parties, becomes Democrat
I'm sure you've heard by now that PA Senator Arlen Specter has left the Republican party to become a Democrat. He gave lots of reasons but the truth is he voted with the Dem/S on the "stimulus" bill and couldn't win the Republican primary because of it. He called Republicans fools for wanting to "purify" the party. I say if you don't stand for something you'll stand for anything (yeah, I let Aaron Tippin use that in a song...). Arlen Specter stands for... Arlen Specter. The WORST kind of politician.
Now he's going to run as a Democrat and presumably they'll let him win their primary because he's the incumbent. Will he win the election? Hard to tell. I'm constantly amazed the capacity of PA voters for self-flagellation at the polls. After all it is red-necks that apparently keep voting that traitor Jack Murtha to his house seat.
Much is being made of this switch giving the Dem/S an fillibuster proof majority. However, Specter voted with them anyway. It is hard to see how anything is going to change.
