The secret Ballot and the Unions
I am amazed by this run the unions and their operatives in Congress are making at the secret ballot. Of course, Congress used the secret ballot in determining Joe Lieberman's fate precisely because they did not want recrimination, one way or the other, over the vote. This is why the unions championed the secret ballot in the votes taken by workers to accept or reject unions in various shops.
When the unions championed the secret ballot (yes, they did push for it), they said the evil boss man/business owners were using knowledge of who voted for or against the union to punish or reward workers and at worst intimidate or actually physically harm those supporting the union. This was true, at least sometimes, and a worthy reason for the secret ballot.
NOW, the union wants to do the same thing, i.e. reject the secret ballot and for the same reason! They want to intimidate those who reject the union. Oh, they say they want to be able to go and "talk" to the opposition to "convince" them they are wrong... Why? Because now workers don't see a benefit in joining the union. They see the unions as non-representative of the members, slush funds for union officers (ala "On the Waterfront") and politicians (mostly if not exclusively Democrats) but don't see much in the way of benefits such as increased pay.
So why do congress critters support legislating the end of the secret ballot? Because as the unions decline so do their contributions to politicians. Ummm... Follow the money.
We support the secret ballot.
