It is the primary business, some say the only business, of government to protect us and provide security. This includes commercial shipping. Is it being done? No. Not for the ships of any flag nor on either African coast. Ships from
Hong Kong,
Denmark,
France,
Russia and
Saudia Arabia have all been hijacked off the coasts of Africa. What is the response? Well, they
often negotiate and certainly aren't consistently
using force.
If you want to stop criminal activity, you have to make the risk too great for the payoff. For the
sorts of payoff these pirates are getting in that part of the world, certain death at the hands of one navy or the other is the only deterrent that will work.
