Sean Hannity and the Demise of Conservatism
Oh, Sean Hannity had me so mad today I could have chewed nails. I don't know what was up but it wasn't a funny bit and I suspect he was serious. To say that perhaps we should re-examine conservatism in light of McCain's victories especially the latest in Florida, is ridiculous.
Let's face it, right is right and wrong is wrong. It is wrong to steal from honest US citizens to give benefits to law breaking, invaders from any other country. McCain wants to do that and he worked with Chappaquidick Kennedy to do so. It is wrong to silence political speech but McCain worked with Feingold to do that. Neither of his allies in these efforts, one of which aroused so much animosity from the American public at large that it has been killed every time it has come to a vote, are Republicans. Indeed, they are the most liberal, that is socialist, of the Democrat party. Now if that is conservative the moon IS made of cheese.
Sean says that if the majority of people are voting for McCain, they must have a different view of how things should be and conservatives should accomodate them. That is like saying the Germans were correct to accomodate Hitler. Wrong is wrong.
My view of McCain is not a very complimentary one. I think he is a pompus, self-serving, opportunistic, elitist who has only a passing acquaintance with the Bill of Rights OR the truth. I think that the only difference between John McCain and Hillary Clinton is the passage of a few years, his service in the military and the length of their hair.
Today, Guliani bowed out and endorsed his "friend" John McCain. I don't suppose we should have expected any less from another candidate who had to change is expressed positions to those of the conservatives in order to have as viable a campaign as he had (however briefly).
Mr. Hannity, if conservatives don't matter, why is it that these Republican candidates all struggle so hard to be identified as Reagan Conservatives? Why was the Guliani endorsement announcement staged at the Reagan library? Why did they bother to change their positions on most of the hot buttons of today away from those espoused by Hillary and the Dem/S to those of the conservatives?
That dog don't hunt Mr. Hannity. Put it another way, calling a tail a leg don't make it one. You've pretty much killed your credibility with me today.
I heard it said the other day that the Republicans could go the way of the party they replaced, the Whigs. At this moment, I'm all for it. I only question that the country can survive long enough for that to happen.
UPDATE: It appears that I did tune in in the middle of a "bit". Not a bit funny in my view.
