  Ellen Degeneres and a Dog
Ok, no demeaning humor about Ellen's choice of companions. It appears that Ellen Degeneres did the liberal thing and adopted a dog for her family. However, said dog didn't get along with all the cats (I know, another opportunity for "humor") in her household. Rather than wait for the interspecies relationships to settle, Ellen hit upon the idea of giving the dog to her hairdresser's children. Sounds ok so far, right? I mean, Ellen has not just kicked the dog to the curb, she's made an attempt to find a good home for the dog. Well it isn't ok.

You see Ellen signed a contract with the liberal no-kill shelter that included invasive welfare checks on the dog by the shelter and then was so honest that she told them she'd moved the incompatible-with-her-family dog on to a place where she was loved. That was a big no-no for the shelter as they now have no control (a big thing for liberals who think we're all too stupid to manage anything on our own) and they demanded the dog be returned. Well, they did more than that, they went with the police (yeah, since when do police enforce civil contracts?) and repossessed the dog. That upset Ellen so much that she did a crying jag thing on her show and got her fans riled up.

Now it appears that some fans may have made death threats to the shelter staff. Over a dog. I just love these two quotes:
"If Ellen wants to place dogs and decide what's a good home, then she should start her own rescue group," she told "Inside Edition.""But I'm the one doing this and I know what I'm doing."
and
"There's got to be some sort of rational compromise," ABC's Diane Sawyer said on "Good Morning America."
Ok, in the first place the whole controversy would have been moot if Ms. Batkis had simply acknowledged that the dog was in a loving home. But, and her quote makes this clear, she's the one who knows what she's doing. In other words, she has to control it. Of course, Ellen is a liberal, too, so of course she knew what she was doing as did her lover/girlfriend/housemate Portia deRossi (there's a subject for another time, maybe) and she also knows how to gin up support among her fans. Ms. Batkis apparently has no fans. And then Diane Sawyer makes the other thoughtless comment because among the emotional there are no rational thinkers. To top it off, this was an all day thing on the 24-hour news networks. Jeez.

For us, the American ideal is personified in the concept of self-reliance, work ethic, honesty/forthrightness, decency, personal property rights, family, religion, an ability to defend oneself from criminals and crooked politicians, and personal responsibility.
