Darfur
When I first saw this video on YouTube the only think I could think of was that that girl has inappropriately displayed her cleavage! Jeez, isn't that a congressional committee in front of which she's testifying? So I looked up her name (Ana Slavin) and found that your popular culture deprived correspondent (me) had missed her publicity blitz. Dollars for Darfur would seem to be a good worthwhile organization in support of Darfur but... Why two teenagers, high school students, have to testify to Congress about Darfur, where people are being murderously persecuted by Muslims, is beyond my understanding. I would think that Congress could find information on Darfur from multiple official and/or first-person sources. Even if the money is actually helping in Darfur I think these kids are naive to think that they are making any fundamental changes in the region.
However, what this really emphasises for me is the hypocrisy of certain politicos who deride our attempt to avoid such a bloodbath in Iraq while demanding immediate intervention in Darfur. What, pray tell, is the difference between killing Muslims in Darfur and killing jihadists in Iraq? Why, it is clear, the jihadists in Darfur are the Dem/S enemies not George W. Bush's enemies. Pure politics is why. Perhaps they could show an actual understanding and desire for controlling the jihadists by increasing the size of the armed forces and supporting the POTUS in the anti-terror war in Iraq as well as in Afghanistan and Darfur.
Ok, so enough ranting. Here's a little political theater to hold you over your Labor Day Weekend.
Here's some pro-Save Darfur propaganda.
Now, I don't want to be too cynical but let's face it, if they looked white we'd be rushing to help. We couldn't get Congress to force a stop to the Rwandan tragedy either.
For us, the American ideal is personified in the concept of self-reliance, work ethic, honesty/forthrightness, decency, personal property rights, family, religion, an ability to defend oneself from criminals and crooked politicians, and personal responsibility.
