Sir:I've long thought that if these delusional murderers such as Seung-Hui Cho were treated there would be fewer such murders. It seems to me that treatment is an iffy thing.
I've been reading recent reports as to your comments concerning the VT Review Panel. In as much as the panel will be reviewing the facts and drawing conclusions based on a logical review of those facts, you should not be telling a supposedly independent panel what their conclusions are to be. I think perhaps that the panel is not independent and has a pre-determined political agenda.
Students and staff with concealed handgun permits SHOULD be allowed to carry on college campuses! Why should their rights be limited by the geographical boundaries of the school. All are legally adults and required to be such by current firearms law. Clearly, the VT administration is and was unable to enforce their edict on the criminal.
I also recently read of your suggestion that there should be 'ammunition' limits and I find that to be, at best, naive. Some of the ammunition used by Cho was .22 LR which is sold by the box of 500. To say that he had 377 rounds of ammunition without addressing the inappropriatness of that ammo to anti-personnel uses is deceptive. I imagine that it was still in the boxes in his backpack effectively unusable in a combat situation (with the campus police and county deputies).
I must also note that you have made little to no mention of the sorry state of mental health facilities for the truly ill such as this young man. A Virginia resident for much of his life, it surely seems to me that the lack of medical care contributed to this act. That CHP holders, already vetted by the Commonwealth, were denied the tools with which to defend themselves exacerbates such situations.
