Their sons are true heroes and we should all be thankful for their service. May God grant this family peace of mind and the strength to go on with their lives.

  Screen Heroes
A recent post on a nameless forum got me to thinking about my screen heroes. I use the term 'hero' a bit loosely as merely acting is not worthy of hero status. However, some actors are linked forever to a certain type of character and generate a large fan base who do see them more as the people they portray than as who they are.

Marion Michael Morrison aka John Wayne, the Duke is just such a person. Actually, he epitomizes the screen or action hero. Hard to believe that he died 27 years ago... I'm sure there are many biographies many of which disagree in certain details either because of ignorance or prejudice. Later in his life, during the Vietnam War, he was controversial for his strong pro-war stance. Some folks think him less a 'hero' because he was married 3 times and drank liquor. I didn't care about those things when I was young and I certainly don't now.

I know a couple of the fellows on this hotshot crew. They seem competent to me and I fought forest fire and learned a lot about it from my dad who fought fire for 27 years working for the US Forest Service.
  Random Thoughts
You may have heard that Cindy "Mother" Sheehan used part of her profits from her son's death (SGLI or other insurance) to buy some acres right next to the POTUS property in Crawford, TX. That' fine, it is her money and her right to live there, but... Apparently, knowing the President's neighbors would never sell to her, she sent somebody to make a straw purchase who presented themselves as a Katrina survivor wanting to make a new life. She lied not only about who she is but even used a lie to garner sympathy from the previous owners. What a scuzz.

Liars are common on the left. You may also have read or heard about how Israel deliberately targeted a UN observation post and killed four "peacekeepers". Well, it seems that Hezbollah was "hugging" the outpost using the observers as human shields. I don't think it worked.

You might have noticed that I put "peacekeepers" in quotes. They certainly didn't do that job as Hezbollah and company have been taking over their area of responsibility for years. The Lebanese aren't in control, the Iranian sub-set is/was.

I'd like to also note that the observers must have been very brave. Even though they were right in the middle of it all and could do absolutely nothing to anyone about it they did what Kofi wanted and stayed until they died. May God take them to his bosom. May Kofi Annan, the crooked, lying, slime that he is rot in hell.

The Israelis have a good reason to keep as much of the infrastructure intact as they can. Well, a couple of good reasons. First, it doesn't look bad for them if they don't commit wholesale destruction of the civilian areas. Second, they can use the infrastructure, namely phone lines, to their own ends. Very clever.

This is just stupid. The magazine BABYTALK has a cover with a baby nursing. Of course, for those of you without children or living incredibly sheltered lives, babies nurse at BREASTS, human BREASTS. Apparently some folks are offended by this. They aren't offended by people, adults and children, shoving large quantities of food in their mouths in TV and print ads. They are offended by babies doing the same. This is just silly. How is it that people are so silly?

The case of the missing moose in, get this, Connecticut! I didn't know that Connecticut had moose (again?). They must be pretty adaptable although they still think they will survive an encounter with an automobile or truck. I hope whoever got it eats well.

Perhaps Mr. Dean doesn't understand what he's saying. No? Maybe Mr. Dean is just politicking. No? Maybe Mr. Dean doesn't represent his party. No? Maybe the Democrats are lying, self-serving, hypocrits. Yeah, that's it.

Now some reading this are undoubtedly Democrats. You might even take exception to my comment, "...Democrats are lying, self-serving, hypocrits..." Youmight or might not be a good Democrat who just happens to vote for the opposition or third party candidates when your party can't manage to come up with a viable candidate. You might not. I have to ask, do you agree with Mr. Dean? Do you contribute to the Democrat National Committee or to local/state Democrat candidates? If you answer yes to either then I don't think you have anything to say to me. End divisiveness? Kinda like a schoolyard bully saying somebody else started the fight.

The Arabs/Muslims have had the same sort of internal, self-destructive, brand of extremism that they have today. Called the Nizaris after Nizar ibn al-Mustansir, whom they supported as caliph. The members of the order were distinguished by their blind obedience to their spiritual leader and by their use of murder to eliminate foes. The order was founded by Hasan ibn al-Sabbah when he gained control (c.1090) of the mountain fortress of Alamut, located S of the Caspian Sea. The order spread over Persia and Syria, gaining control of many strongholds, and it soon inspired terror throughout the Muslim world. Members were organized into strict classes, according to degree of initiation into the secrets of the order. The most important of the classes were the devotees, who sought martyrdom and were the instruments of assassination. Hasan and the grand masters who ruled the order after him wielded great political power until the coming of the Mongols. Hulagu Khan attacked and destroyed (1256) their fortresses and massacred most of the Persian branch of the sect. The Syrian branch, with which the Crusaders came in contact, suffered a similar fate at the hands of Baybars, the Mamluk sultan of Egypt. Only scattered groups of the order survived; they are said to persist today, particularly in N Syria.

Is it true that the CIA has Classified Nizari Assassin Cult Topic Due To National Security? I don't know. I do find it interesting that others have discussed what I've long been considering. I don't know if this is good or bad though! I think perhaps a couple of those folks are a bubble off.

  16 Year-old Virginian's Cancer Affects YOU!
I know, you might not agree, but do you think that the government should tell you how to treat your children? Should decide for your children when they allow other children of the same age to make life and death decisions? The story, even during the Mideast Israel/Hezbollah war, made it above the fold in some venues. This is CNN's version, Teen cancer patient battles to choose own treatment.

Do you think that the government should tell you how to care for and treat your children? Clearly the majority do as we've passed and generally approve laws that prohibit abuse of children. Is this abuse? Is abortion abuse? Is late term abortion abuse? Why is it permissible to allow a parent, even only one of the parents, to decide to abort a child at various stages up to the point the child is actually being born but not allow those parents to, with the reasonable approval of the child, to choose to take what is likely to be riskier treatment for, in this case, cancer? Even odder is that if he wasn't male, and was pregnant he could choose to abort the pregnancy without interference of either the court or of his parents and you'd be damned in the press if you disagreed! So, a child can choose to take another child's life but can't be trusted, with his parents full knowledge and approval, to risk their own life.

I've noted that the "liberals" (socialists) and conservatives have taken interesting positions. The liberals applaud the judge's decision as it gives the young man the highest possible chance for life (but they would also have applauded his mother's decision to abort him if she had so chosen). The conservatives have generally been disturbed that the parents and boy have been prevented from making their own decision as to treatment (yet they would categorically prohibit abortion).
Barry Taylor, the family's attorney, said the case had major ramifications not only in Virginia, but also across the nation when it comes to parents' rights to determine what is best for their children.

"I don't think any family in the commonwealth would be comfortable with the fact that a social worker with no medical training could make a medical decision for their child," Taylor said. "It's an assault on the American family."

No kidding. And doesn't this sort of thing, it isn't the first time this has happened, just open all of us up to second-guessing by some government flunky? Oh sure, there are dedicated, thinking, reasonable, hard-working social workers out there but there are also numerous lazy, irresponsible or arrogant people working in this field. The courts give them, regardless of their approach to their training or work, the benefit of a doubt in cases because they are the government and because they are there to protect the child. Frankly, it is one thing to be hired to do a job and it is quite another to do the job. One would have to wonder which case worker you were assigned (or rather, to whom you or your child(ren)were assigned).

This bothers me no end though. In Virginia, you get your driver's license at age 16. What does that imply? How many life and death decisions could you potentially make as a driver? But, you can't decide for yourself?

I mentioned that if you're a female and 16 you can decide to abort your baby without your parents consent and protected by the courts. You see, we can't have laws regarding parental notification prior to an abortion (and this was only notification NOT parental approval) because this somehow diminishes a woman's right to control her body. Do 16 year old men not have this right?

I heard today a question as to where we draw the line. Personally, I like the driver's license age but there is another age apparently in current vogue with liberals and that is age 12. Used by some judges in considering the child's desires as to custody, the age of 12 for boys and 14 for girls was long accepted as the age of puberty and so of "adulthood".

  Man Makes Money from the Dead, Without Consent

OKLAHOMA CITY - A woman whose Marine son died while serving in Iraq is fighting to keep his name off anti-war T-shirts. Judy Vincent learned last year that Cpl. Scott Vincent's name is among about 1,700 included on a T-shirt being sold by an Arizona man over the Internet. The front of the shirt reads "Bush Lied" and the back reads "They Died."

The woman, whose son was killed in April 2004, pushed for Oklahoma legislators to pass a law that makes it a misdemeanor to use a soldier's name or likeness for advertising purposes without consent. The law goes into effect this November.

The shirt vendor, Dan Frazier of Flagstaff, Ariz., issued an open letter to family members praising the soldiers' bravery and sacrifice, but said he would not stop selling the merchandise.
I never cease to be amazed that their are folks who will use anyone else to promote themselves. To use another's pain to make money not to mention to lie (Bush didn't lie) is abominable.

U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D- Mass., who was in town Sunday to help Gov. Jennifer Granholm campaign for her re-election bid, took time to take a jab at the Bush administration for its lack of leadership in the Israeli-Lebanon conflict.

"If I was president, this wouldn't have happened," said Kerry during a noon stop at Honest John's bar and grill in Detroit's Cass Corridor.

Bush has been so concentrated on the war in Iraq that other Middle East tension arose as a result, he said.

"The president has been so absent on diplomacy when it comes to issues affecting the Middle East," Kerry said. "We're going to have a lot of ground to make up (in 2008) because of it."

Kerry lost by a narrow margin to Bush in 2004 and plans to seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2008.

Today marks the 12th day of fighting between Israel and Lebanon. Israel launched air strikes after Hezbollah militants, whom operate within Lebanon, kidnapped two Israeli soldiers in an attempt to swap them for prisoners.

Israel began a ground invasion, sending tanks and troops across the border as thousands of Lebanese have fled to escape the fighting.

Hezbollah guerillas should have been targeted with other terrorist organizations, such as al-Qaida and the Taliban, which operate in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Kerry said. However, Bush, has focused military strength on Iraq.

"This is about American security and Bush has failed. He has made it so much worse because of his lack of reality in going into Iraq.…We have to destroy Hezbollah," he said.
Oh yeah, he didn't want to do anything to anyone... Just what was he going to do? Has he ever heard of strategy as opposed to tactics? Jeez, my head just wants to explode!
  Is Israel Right & Does it Matter?
Israel is working to destroy Hamas and Hezbullah. Are they being successful and should they stop? Are they right to do this? Should we help? Overtly or covertly?

Of course they are right to do what they are doing. They've been attacked and they should quash that immediately. It appears that they are being successful, we can only hope they don't slow down or stop. I don't know if we should help more than we are or, rather, differently. But, yes, we should help in the way(s) which are most conducive to the destruction of both Hamas and Hezbullah.

Soldiers' Words May Test PBS Language Rules- I have to say that I agree with PBS in this instance. Aside from the quoting of the POTUS saying "shit" I think it disagreeable that we would alter the words or appearance of veterans, people who put it all on the line for our country.

No, this is not 'our war'- Pat Buchanan has his head in the sand. War is hell, it is double hell when you've done all you personally can to avoid it but there are fanatics who've taken over your neighborhood, even taken over your country, to do evil and you'd rather they hadn't. Still you must pay the price. It is sad to say that the Lebanese, particularly many Christians, had tried to pay the price up front and keep the Palestinians, Syrians and Hezbullah out of their country so that they would not be caught between Israel defending herself and the islamofacists who care nothing for ANY Lebanese. For what it is worth I'm very close to a family of Lebanese 1st generation US citizens whose family came to the US from Lebanon over 90 years ago. They, as Christians had a better life here then and it appears that the forces that drove them from Lebanon 90 years ago still hold sway, namely religious zealotry. Get with it Pat, you don't get something for nothing.

- my children went to this church as part of the religious education program when they attended Churchville Elementary. I don't know if he was there at the time, I don't think so, but it still ticks me off. I know that I had to undergo the inquisition to become a substitute teacher. How will small farmers, those who keep kosher, etc. deal with this? Why won't the government permit voluntary testing for BSE (so-called mad-cow disease)? What fools still don't believe that government regulation doesn't include cost to the producer?

In an effort to increase sales of meat products to foreign countries, and to supposedly pinpoint sources of contagious and infectious animal diseases, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is attempting to implement a program, found questionable by many, named the National Animal Identification System (NAIS).

The USDA claims that the NAIS will protect livestock from diseases and increase food safety by allowing the sources of diseases in livestock to be traced to the source of origin within 48-hours. That claim has been disputed by many people, including attorney Mary-Louise Zanoni, JD, PhD, who writes in her article "The National Animal Identification System: A New Threat to Rural Freedom," that the the NAIS will be far more expensive and less effective for protecting the food supply than testing every cow slaughtered for diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

While the USDA's claims a desire to prevent diseases such as BSE from ending up in food, it's banned meat producers from voluntarily testing cattle for BSE. In March, Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, LLC, filed a lawsuit against the USDA in an attempt to challenge the USDA's ban on the voluntary testing.

Dr. Zanoni also writes that "Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the NAIS is its proponents' lack of concern for individual privacy and religious freedom. Consider that the NAIS plan is a compulsory registration with the government of all people who want to raise their own animal foods" and has warned mentions that the NAIS appears to violate several constitutional amendments, and has also written, with detailed explanations in a letter to the USDA, that the NAIS violates the first, fourth, fifth and fourteenth amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

The NAIS, if implemented, will violate privacy and the U.S. Constitution for such purposes as increasing international trade and complying with international treaties, despite a 1956 Supreme Court decision ruling that treaties can't supersede the the U.S. Constitution.

The forces behind the implementation of the USDA's National Animal Identification System (NAIS) have been discovered to include not only corporate interests ranging from Monsanto, Cargill and the horse-slaughter industry, to Digital Angel and segments of the horse racing industry, but various U.S. government and international agencies ranging from the Department of Homeland Security to the United Nations' FAO. Critics of the NAIS have voiced concerns about political corruption being behind the implementation of the NAIS.

It's been learned that the USDA and other government agencies are proceeding with the NAIS as a result of orders from President G.W. Bush, as outlined in Homeland Security Presidential Directive 9 (HSPD-9), entitled "Defense of United States Agriculture and Food." That directive brings together the work of various government agencies including the EPA, USDA, HHS, DHS and FBI, which are all now responsible in one way or another for expanding their surveillance of farms. The NAIS has also been quietly implemented through state laws and state departments of agriculture, in cooperation with the USDA.

What some find to be the most discomforting aspect of the NAIS is its apparent purpose: to let the government know where all animals considered livestock are located so that it could carry out "depopulation" or "stamping out" procedures, which would begin with the quarantining of animals followed by the wide-scall killing of all livestock and other animals---possibly including wildlife, dogs and cats, according to the United Nations' FAO document entitled "Manual on Procedures for Disease Eradication by Stamping Out."

The USDA and state departments of agriculture have been found to be cooperating with international organizations such as the UN's FAO in connection with the NAIS. Such wide-scale killing would take place within a ten kilometer "zone" around the animal found to be afflicted with a contagious or infectious disease. During "depopulation," healthy animals would also be destroyed; owners of animals with certain diseases, who could be treated and returned to good health, would be given no treatment choices other than having their animals killed.

If the NAIS goes into effect as planned, the government will force livestock owners to have their animals identified in some way with RFID chips, such as ear tags or injectible chips. Horse owners, for example, would be required to have their horses injected with RFID chips, which would put some horses at an increased risk for developing cancerous skin growths called sarcoids. In addition, such injections could possibly result in skin infections, hematomas and abscesses.Other possible health-risks could result from chip migration within the horse's body.

Furthermore, due to the Animal Health Protection Act, Title 7, Chapter 109, of the U.S. code, which took over twenty years to be passed into law, the U.S. government will be able to seize, occupy and destroy private property and buildings in connection with the "depopulation" efforts.

Related state laws exist in state governments as well, such as Title 3, Section 105, of the Annotated Code of Maryland. Title 3, Section 105, of the Annotated Code of MD, even without the NAIS being in effect, allows Maryland officials to violate the U.S. Constitution and conduct possibly unnecessary searches and seizures. That law allows government officials to enter anyone's property at any time, carry out any kind of testing on any livestock---whether necessary or not, or whether or not it will harm or kill the animals. The law's vagueness also allows government officials to kill, or in its words, "destroy," any animal with any contagious or infectious disease---that could include illnesses which are fairly minor and treatable.

Many owners of horses and small farms have been perplexed and angered by the government's attempts to foist the NAIS upon them. Questions sent in letters to politicians have resulted in vague answers and misleading information supplied to politicians by the FDA and state departments of agriculture.

Due to people having become aware of the NAIS, and not wanting that harmful burden placed upon them, a grassroots movement has sprung up across the nation to oppose the NAIS and related government policies.

The USDA, apparently displeased that a grassroots movement to oppose the NAIS has surfaced---and has been alerting people dangers and information pertaining to the NAIS which have been kept quiet, plans to spend $10 million dollars on pro-NAIS publicity to counter objections to the NAIS.

Some of the misleading information that's already been spread by the USDA, with the help of pro-NAIS interests, has included convincing many people that the NAIS is voluntary---that's a half truth; the NAIS is only voluntary until it goes into full effect, which is planned to happen in 2008. At the present time, people are being asked to voluntarily tell the government where their animals are located so that they can be assigned "premise IDs."

Horse owners have been astounded that some national associations, claiming to represent them, such as the the American Horse Council (AHC), have been working against them in support of the NAIS, when there appear to be no legitimate reasons for the inclusion of horses in the NAIS, since horses aren't raised for food, or eaten as food, in the U.S. The USDA claims that horses can possibly spread some diseases to other livestock, or carry and spread certain zoonitic diseases to people. However, horses are no more more of a danger for spreading such diseases than wildlife or people who may carry diseases to other locations on their clothing, shoes and car tires, etc. Many of the claims made by proponents of the NAIS with regards to zoonotic diseases have been shown to be misleading.

Another reason for horses being included in the NAIS has been given by Colonel John Hoffman, Program Manager, Food and Agriculture, for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security---which has taken over some of the USDA's functions. He believes that horses need to be tracked and identified because, he says, "Until the 1980's, the Soviet Union continued to produce in its bio-weapons program a disease agent taken from horses but lethal to humans too." He's concerned that many horses are transported throughout the U.S. without being tracked. It's important to note that disease agents can come from a vast number of sources found throughout nature, not just from horses.

Some statistics pertaining to the American Horse Council have been researched by Karen Nowak, which inform us that that 57% of the AHC's 2005 board of trustees was directly involved in racing interests, which appear to support the NAIS, and there were more than twice as many involved in showing interests (15%) than recreational interests (8%). A study conducted by the AHC shows that only 9% of horses are used in racing and 29% are used in showing while 43% are used for recreational uses. Therefore the AHC is not representative the interests of most horse owners and is misleading politicians and others by claiming to represent most horse owners.

As to the Equine Species Working Group that's working with the USDA to determine what form of ID is to be used with horses, Ms. Nowak has reported that 50% of its members are connected with racing interests and 38% have direct ties to racing interests; 21% are involved in show organizations and 4% are involved in recreational uses of horses.

If the NAIS into effect as planned, every time that a horse leaves wherever it resides---whether that merely involves a ride down the road, or even just into the road or onto an adjoining property, going for a trial ride nearby, or a horse is trailered somewhere, the movements of the horse, and whomever the horse has been in contact with, will need to be reported to the government within 24 hours.

A goal of the NAIS is to track all movements of all livestock from birth to death. Companies such as Microsoft Corporation and Computer Sciences Corporation have been involved in the computer-related aspect of the NAIS for the tracking of animals.

According to the National Organic Farming Organization of Massachusetts, "The most immediate impact of mandating NAIS would be to put some small farmers out of business."

At this time, some small farms and horse owners have been putting plans on hold to expand their businesses and to breed their animals. Some are even questioning whether or not they will continue on with their farming and equestrian activities if the NAIS goes into effect. The effect of the NAIS on small farms and a large part of the equestrian community could be catastrophic and result in large fines, loss of property and seizures, or death, of animals which are regarded as long-time friends rather than just livestock to many. Not every government program undertaken for the public welfare is the harbringer of totalitarian government but this one gives me the willies. So far as I can see, it doesn't allow for appeals, allows enforcement at the point of a gun (as do all government laws), ensures that costs of animal ownership of all kinds will rise and does nothing to ensure any improvement in safety. Rush Limbaugh, Neal Boortz, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Laura Ingraham, Michael Reagan, and G. Gordon Liddy. I know about but can't pick up Mark Levin and Oliver North (but I sure do watch "War Stories" on FNC!).

This good collection of convervative (mostly) voices is a far cry from the whining, sniveling nonsensical stuff one used to hear on the radio. That includes Larry King who was, at one time, a favorite of my Grandmother. However, I suppose they disagreed on the death penalty. She was all for it. I certainly am glad I don't have to listen to people who must hate me.
  Iran using Hezbullah to Distract from Nuclear Weapon?
Aside from there being a lot of disagreement on how to properly romanize the Arabic spelling of Hezbullah, we have to ask this question. How is it that at precisely the same time that Iran looked as though it might be forced into allowing controls on nuclear development, Hezbullah attacks Israel and the world apparently forgets that Iran could be developing nuclear warheads for those same missiles raining down on Israel. Is it luck or not? I suppose we'll see.

  Do you want a depression or VICTORY over the Islamofacists?
Do you even have an idea of what a depression would do to our country? Think maybe that your 401K and investments will keep you fed even if you lose your job? Think the government will be able to ensure that your children are unaffected?

Look at the photo at left. September 1938, Coal miner's child breaking up large pieces of coal to take home. Pursglove, Scotts Run, West Virginia. Do you want your child, grand-child, neice, nephew to be this child? This is what this child had to do so that his family could cook and heat their home.

What you might not understand is that this situation is goal of the islamofacists. They believe that they will destroy all the heathens (that's Christians, Jews, etc.) if they destroy the financial stability of the USofA.

Ok, so perhaps you'd prefer that this was YOUR only job. How would you react to the requirement that you sell all the things you've accumulated for years of hard work for pennies on the dollar just so that you can eat. Just eat. Maybe you'd prefer that you had no options, no where to go, nobody to fall back on. Perhaps you think your parents could take care of you.

Maybe you'd be happy standing in a bread or soup line. You might think that the homeless shelters could handle everyone, but how is that possible? For this country to go from the most prosperous in the world with a homeless or indigent population of maybe a million to having millions without homes, work, food... Is the reduction of your days to something like this ca. 1930 Breadline at McCauley Water Street Mission under Brooklyn Bridge, New York is a pleasing prospect.

Al Queda's biggest, and last, attack in the US was on the World Trade Center. The hope then and in 1993 was to destroy the center of US and world financial markets. To some extent it worked. There was disruption of the stock markets, it took time to reconstitute the backed up records of the various finance firms with offices in the twin towers. This was exacerbated by the loss of key personnel in those firms. The attack and subsequent military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq also caused investor doubts and drove down the stock market. The recent escalation of conflict between Israel and the islamofacist organizations Hamas and Hezbulloh have done the same, driving up the cost of crude oil and making the investors nervous. But now, if it wasn't already so, it is a goal...

  The Middle East & World War, continued
Israel won't back down. They've finally convinced a majority of the electorate that land for peace won't work. Hamas started it and Hezbollah tried to trump them, Syria is afraid that their government will also be overthrown and Iran is ruled by folks that hate the west, hate Sunni Moslems, hate Israel, etc. Iran is proven to be supporting the terrorist organizations through Syria (whose Sunnis are working with the Shiite Iranians out of desperation for their own political life) and both are garnering not much world sympathy (a possible mis-calculation) but of course the Iranians don't care.

Will this become the next world war? It is still possible but less likely as the world's apologists for these folks, Russia and China, are being a lot less vocal. The G8 conferees made a fairly united statement against the Palestinian/Terrorist/Syrian/Iranian actions which won't bother them but gives any nation thinking of siding with them have reason to re-think such a position. The more lopsided the two sides the less likely that the situation will expand.

Of course, one can't ever discount the insanity of the islamofacists...

POTUS Bush makes a cogent comment to Tony Blair about the mid-east crisis and uses the word "shit" and the press goes a-titter. What hypocrisy! Listen to these folks talk off-mic/camera and you'd think you were talking with an old mule-skinner. Watch a movie and you see F this and F that. Yet they are worried that Bush said "shit". Of course they don't point out that Bush said in private exactly what he's been saying in public. That kinda kills their conspiracy theories. So maybe they are a-titter as part of their conspiracy...

  Hillary and the Left
I was reading this topic, NYT: Senator Clinton, in Arkansas, Says Democrats Are 'Wasting Time', on DemocraticUnderground.com and noticed several things.
  1. These folks cuss like a drunken sailor (my apologies to those who have, in fact been drunken sailors).
  2. They have conveniently forgotten that the Civil Rights act only passed because President Johnson got the Republicans to vote for it. The Democrats, including the Byrd, were "agin" it.
  3. There are quite a few folks who think of us what is true of them. IOW, they lie, they mislead, etc.
  4. The majority of posters don't seem to see Hillary as different from the Republicans like Chaffee and Snow as illustrated here...

  The Middle East and World War
Many seem to be pushing the idea that we could be on the brink of World War III (WWIII). I rather think this would be WWIV, WWIII having been the "Cold War" which really wasn't but that's an academic discussion. The truth is that there are several folks, most notably the Iranians, trying to make more of themselves than they deserve to be. The Iranians led by their mullahs and current President are nuts enough to destroy the world to achieve their goals.

North Korea or, more precisely, Kim Jong-Il is also trying to get what it can from the rest of the world by threatening with nuclear weapons. What they want is cash, food, and "respect".

I think that in the end the US will be forced to do what was heretofore unthinkable, nuclear attacks on these countries. With some luck and patient maneuvering by both diplomats and the military we might be able to pull it off without destroying oil fields or killing millions. Then again, we might all have to endure economy destroying $20 a gallon gasoline and a depression so bad that it will assume the title of "Great Depression". Or will we?

I think more than likely what will happen is that when we can't get what we need we will become the imperial country, along with our allies, that we've been accused of being. It won't matter who's in the White House or who controls the Congress. Money is the thing that will drive the government to ensure that energy sources are available and secure. The draft might even be re-instated.

Now, many folks coming through the shop today have been watching the news and they are about evenly divided as to the seriousness of the situation. They are also about evenly divided as to whether or not we should be involved. I find that amazing. How in heaven's name could this happen and we not, in some way, be involved.

  Do We Need MORE Proof of the Democrats' Radicalism?
Lieberman's 'Judas kiss' could seal his primary fate By Rupert Cornwell in Washington published: 14 July 2006.

We've been reading about Joe Lieberman's struggle, unusual for an incumbent, to retain his seat against a challenger from his own party but this article brings the whole situation into perspective.

"He's a Republican mole in the Democratic party," says Pravil Banker, director of a financial company and a man who in other circumstances might be a natural Lieberman supporter.

"He's the guy who goes on [Republican-supporting] Fox News. He's the tame Democrat that even conservatives can stomach.

"He's too much a part of the Washington establishment. We must have someone who's in touch with us."
Now this tells us the whole story in a very concise way. When a Democrat from his home state says that Joe is a "Republican mole", you know that something has changed. Lieberman has consistently voted as a liberal votes. Then to call him a "tame Democrat" and to belittle him because he appears on FNC simply reinforces the viewpoint.

The big issue supposedly is Iraq. Mr. Lieberman's opposition is Ken Lamont, a man who doesn't mind making money but apparently,
...has switched from friend into foe - but in sorrow rather than anger. "I kept thinking Joe was going to change on Iraq, that he'd stand up and say it isn't right," he says. "But he did the opposite, and that inspired me to get into the race."

On Iraq, he says: "We've distanced ourselves from our traditions, we've ignored our values and are the weaker for it."
Disregarding the fact that Lamont is wrong and self-destructive (how is an insecure US going to make him some money, any money?) he's POed because Lieberman hasn't waffled on Iraq and still supports the war. Lamont says also
Among them are jobs, energy policy, and the country's failure to provide 47 million Americans - one in six of the population - with health coverage. " We have to insist on universal health care, and not go on spending $250m a day in Iraq."
When your own party has so demonized the other side that they really believe that there is massive unemployment during a time when the unemployment rates are about as low as they've ever been, and you are a part of the "establishment" that caused that you're bound to have problems I suppose.

And there is this gem that illustrates that the radical left can't tolerate diversity in the Democrat Party.
Daily Kos, and organisations like Moveon.org, have thrown all their energies into toppling Mr Lieberman.
Why would they do that unless they hate moderates? Don't they think that Lieberman as a senior Senator could be more help to the cause than Lamont as a junior senator? Why would they? These are all national organizations who care nothing at all for Connecticut issues. In other words it is about national socialism.
  How Can a School System Teach?
How can a school system hope to teach students when the administrators can't understand the law? School System Leaves Soldier Behind is the story but what is most disturbing is that there are idiots in supervisory positions who can't adhere to the law. Makes me wonder what other laws Mr. Duncan has ignored that he doesn't like. Makes me wonder what other teachers Mr. Duncan has abused because he disagrees with them on such things as public service, a volunteer position or even religious affiliation. And to think this was near Nashville, TN? How does the heartland tolerate such quislings? How?

Thank you for your service CPT Parker, I hope you win big. However, you're probably so service oriented that you won't seek anything more than your job and back wages. You should seek Mr. Duncan's dismissal. So should the voters.

So, how does this system hope to pass on values of good citizenship, the value of being able to read, and so forth when the administrators don't exhibit those values? Does your child attend school in such a system?

  AMTRAK - How DOES it continue?
AMTRAK needs help. It could be a viable and enjoyable mode of transportation for those of us outside the NorthEast Corridor. It is in direct competition with the bus system for those who don't drive and can't afford air fare. The cars are comfortable, the facilities work, and the fares are fair. However, the stations stink, literally, the employees seem to have been hired away from Dirty Dick's and must think that being abrupt and rude is entertaining. In short, customer service isn't that great. Most importantly, the trains don't run on time. Riding the Cardinal from Prince, WV the train was 1 hour and 15 minutes late into Prince and 2 hours late into Staunton. To me, that is a killer for a business. If you can't reliably deliver your product how do you continue to sell it?

Maybe you know the answer, I'm still working on it!

Neo-Nazis infiltrating the US military

Neo-Nazi and white supremacist hate groups are taking advantage of relaxed recruiting standards to infiltrate the US military to get combat training, a civil rights group reported.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks domestic extremists groups, called on US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward white supremacist groups in the military.

"Neo-Nazi groups and other extremists are joining the military in large numbers so they can get the best training in the world on weapons, combat tactics and explosives," said Mark Potok, director of the center's Intelligence Project.

"We should consider this a major security threat, because these people are motivated by an ideology that calls for race war and revolution. Any one of them could turn out to be the next Timothy McVeigh," he said.

McVeigh was the decorated Gulf War veteran and white supremacist who detonated a truck bomb outside a federal office building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in April 1995, killing 168 people.

After the Oklahoma City bombing and incidents involving active duty troops, the Pentagon took steps to keep racist extremists from the ranks.

But the center said standards have been relaxed because of wartime recruiting pressures, allowing large numbers of people with links to neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups to join the military.

It cited neo-Nazi and white supremacist publications that encourage their followers to join the military to get combat training.

The report quoted a Defense Department gang investigator, Scott Barfield, as saying neo-Nazis "stretch across all branches of service, they are linking up across the branches once they're inside, and they are hard-core."

"We've got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad," he was quoted as saying. "That's a problem."

"Recruiters are knowingly allowing neo-Nazis and white supremacists to join the armed forces, and commanders don't remove them from the military even after we positively identify them as extremists or gang members," Barfield said.

A Pentagon spokesman acknowledged there have been incidents involving gang-related graffiti, but said dealing with it was the responsibility of military commanders.

"Good order and discipline is the responsibility of commanders and to the extent there are any activities that are inconsistent with good order and discipline it is incumbent upon the commanders to address those," said spokesman Bryan Whitman.

First, I don't believe the "civil rights groups" much any more. Too much crying wolf. See just about any news release from the Rainbow Coalition. Lying makes them money. It is ALL about the money. Old Jesse is all about blackmailing corporations into donating to his organization, in part to pay for his mistresses. Well one, at least... However, let's address the first part of the paragraph, relaxed recruiting standards. Folks, they haven't relaxed the part about no felons and such, they have lowered requirements for test scores on the ASVAB, increased the allowable age, and might not require a high school diploma. That stuff (other than the age thing, now 42 formerly 35) has changed every so often as long as I served, i.e. since June 1973. Perhaps they are meaning that neo-nazis (undeserving of capitalization) aren't as smart as the rest of us. With that I'd agree.

As I remember it, there already is a zero tolerance policy. You answer a question as to whether or not you are a member of any group advocating overthrowing the government. No go.

As to the part about training, well they found out that some Crips and Bloods were doing the same and they've moved against that as well.

And a lot of those folks are radicalized AFTER enlistment. I saw it several times in my service. Leadership is the key to countering this cancer. AND it isn't all Caucasians, there are blacks, Hispanics and others including the aforementioned gangs.

I'd like to know how this is happening. Half the recruiters I know and worked with were BLACK or HISPANIC. Are you telling me that they are sitting across the desk from these skinhead punks and processing them to meet mission (quota in the rest of the sales world) and save their careers. If so, what does that say about the institution? This really bothers me as all these recruiters with the exception of some supervisors are Sergeants, non-commissioned officers, who are the military's backbone. It galls me that anyone of these brothers in arms would be forced to do this.

Darn straight! Unfortunately, we've seen a decline in the quality of officers over the past 10-15 years. I think that many are intimidated by their soldiers as the education gap and age difference is not all that great any longer. MANY, many NCOs and junior enlisted have at least some college and many officers ability to spell and reason would lead one to think that they barely graduated.

If there IS a problem it needs to be rooted out right now. There is no place for such things in the service of the United States of America.

  NYC Mayor Says U.S. Depends on Immigrants
"Although they broke the law by illegally crossing our borders ... our city's economy would be a shell of itself had they not, and it would collapse if they were deported," he said. "The same holds true for the nation." That's from Michael Bloomberg, the rich, socialist, Republican. This fellow has got to be one of the most internally conflicted human beings on the face of the earth. He is a socialist through and through as he constantly leads NYC government to do it all for NYC residents including monitoring their second-hand smoke intake. He's rich (how can you be a rich socialist unless you're a hypocrite?) Illegals are good. Sorry, but I don't buy it. Illegals are stealing jobs from the folks that elected him. Well, maybe, I mean, are the illegals voting? Do they vote for Democrats? It is a puzzle, isn't it? Of course NYC is a liberal (aka socialist) bastion. What should I expect? Maybe it is just me being foolish...
Seems to me that the term "friend" has been devalued.

I know what I think of as a friend. A friend is a confidant, a person you can trust with life, family and fortune and not worry at all. A friend is somebody who is always there to help and for whom YOU are always there to help. Ideally, your spouse should be a friend, a best friend.

Unfortunately it seems to me that all too often a "friend" is really just an acquaintance. Just somebody you know, not well, but somewhat through work, play, shopping, a neighbor, perhaps even family. Some folks seem to refer to a person as "friend" only because they have met them. No more than being introduced qualifies a person as "friend" in their minds. Now that can't be right.

What should we expect when people greet others to whom they've not even been introduced as "friend" as in "Glad to meet you friend." Sorry, but you don't know me, you don't know anything about me, we are not friends. And just as these well meaning folks cheapen the word "friend" so too do the young folks who date, have sex and then "stay friends." Perhaps I'm old fashioned.

Well, I suppose that you should know that I might like you, will treat you right, never steal from you, never try to seduce or abuse anyone in your family, and never slander you but it will be something else when I call you "friend."

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

  The Foil Hat Crowd
I was stationed at the Presidio de Monterey, Monterey, California. The year was 1973. I can't remember the radio station but they played music like Seals & Crofts, Loggins & Messina, and Carly Simon. They also had an hour long radio talk show on one subject, government related conspiracies. Conspiracies to kill Kennedy (pick one), Martin Luther King, continue the war (that would be the VIETNAM war children), and so forth.

Things haven't really changed but there has been an evolution that has included anything you cn imagine from UFOs & alien abductions to the war (now you can say Iraq). The government particularly George W. Bush is responsible for everything from global cooling (now global warming which will cause an ice age) to the attacks of 9/11/2001. Depending on who you might be listening to/reading, every government official from the POTUS to your local dog-catcher is in on it ESPECIALLY if he/she is a Republican (or worse yet, a neocon).

These folks are so angry and so wrapped up in their delusional ignorance that it is not possible to reason with them, you must endure them. Don't try to confuse these folks with actual facts, logic, or observed contradictions in their dogma, they will move to cut your head off and shit down your neck, figuratively in most cases.

I'm tired of it. When I meet these folks face to face I call them on their statements and dare them to attempt to avoid reason. I educate them on applicable history and the facts in so much as the facts are actually known and point out the many prejudiced suppositions on which they base their arguments. Seldom fails, at least so long as they're in my presence. Truth be told I seldom see such folks again, you don't suppose they're avoiding me? However, there is now a new group of such folks.

These folks hide behind pseudonyms (aka "handles") on various forums and attempt to pass on their beliefs as fact. Call them on this and they can get very nasty and sometimes destroy what was once a perfectly good forum. The truth is that an articulate writing style doesn't make one correct when faulty logic is used. They don't get that. What really interests me about these folks is that they tend to support Democrat candidates. I wonder, is it just coincidence?

Maybe not...
  Blessed 4th of July to All Citizens of the United States of America
230 years ago citizens (including several of my ancestors) of the 13 English colonies in North America began a risky enterprise whereby they hoped to secure for themselves and their descendents some semblance of liberty and freedom. These men and women risked life and fortune and gave succeeding generations opportunities previously unknown to most. We have struggled as a nation to rise above our individual human imperfections and sustain this most liberal of all governmental systems and we have done remarkably well. With God's blessings we may be able to continue despite the constant attacks from both outside and inside our noble country. I would like to take this opportunity to wish for each and everyone a wonderful and blessed 4th of July weekend. Please, drive safely, drink and eat responsibly, enjoy the holiday, and remember the sacrifices that so many have made for us.
For us, the American ideal is personified in the concept of self-reliance, work ethic, honesty/forthrightness, decency, personal property rights, family, religion, an ability to defend oneself from criminals and crooked politicians, and personal responsibility.

Whoop-ti-do, the forum for the rest of us...
